PMH Wood is the sawmill division at Pioneer Mountain Homestead where we specialize in milling rough cut lumber in various local hardwood species. Our small business is located near Raystown Lake, Pennsylvania and we strive to provide lumber and milling services to larger populated areas such as State College, PA. The sawmill division of Pioneer Mountain Homestead was added in 2020.
So, what makes our sawmill worth the drive from State College?
Since we are a small business, we are directly involved in helping you, our customer. Whether you are a professional, amateur, or commercial woodworker, a cabinet maker, a flooring manufacturer, a contractor, a hobbyist, a carpenter, homeowner, or do-it-yourselfer, we take the time to understand your needs. We meet our customers by appointment only which means while on site you are getting our complete undivided attention. We even take weekend appointments because we know how busy life can be.
We aim to provide big service while maintaining our small business appeal. To us you are not just a number. We work with you to get you the rough-cut lumber you are looking for. We spend time listening to your needs. If we don’t have a particular species of hardwood in stock, we will try to find it for you. We have many business contacts with loggers and other log yards to source the particular wood species you need.
We typically stock our rough-cut lumber in thicknesses of 4/4 and 8/4 with lengths of eight to 10 feet. However, if these dimensions don’t suit your needs, we are happy to cut other thicknesses and lengths. We do live-edge, single square edge, and dimensional lumber.
Some of the specialty projects we have milled include fireplace mantel beams, large live edge slabs for table tops and countertops, bar tops, wood for custom bike bridges, and blanks for lathe turnings. We have established a following of specialized woodworkers and for these artisans, we will set aside wood that we believe will work for their particular craft. If you are specialized and have a “wish list” of woods, let us help you find them.
We recently started selling what we call “project boards”. These are typically boards of less than eight feet in length. These boards are premium wood for small project woodworkers. It keeps the cost down for you by not having to purchase unneeded larger quantities.
We love seeing what is made from our wood and regularly welcome those who create to share pictures with us. With your permission, we will share your project to our website or social media accounts. If you sell your creations, let us know. We often feature shop owners on our social media accounts.
The PMH Wood Sawmill at Pioneer Mountain Homestead is located at 16477 Sharman Lane, James Creek, PA 16657. Hours are by appointment.
From State College: Head south on Route 26. Turn left on to Dogtown Road. Turn left on to Sharman Lane. We are about 1 mile from the boat launch at Shy Beaver, Raystown Lake. Our address is: 16477 Sharman Lane, James Creek, PA 16657. (Please note: We have been told that on some GPS units, Dogtown Road is referred to as Shy Beaver Road. To be sure you have the correct road, Dogtown Road is the first left after passing the Shy Beaver Boat Center). If you reach Cherrytown, turn around. You went a little too far.
